Long Term Care - if you're 50 years or older...

Should you buy long term care insurance? Well, there are the blessed few who can self-insure, but even those folks own fire insurance on their home that they could afford to replace. Don't we all buy insurance, but hope we never have to use it? One in 1200 people will use their fire insurance and 1 in 248 their car insurance; in in 2 will need long term care. And if you think long term care insurance is too expensive you should compare it to a nursing home stay. Long term Care insurance is about being able to receive the care you want in the comforts of your own home and having some choices and control over your own life in the even you are unable to care for yourself.

Now you can buy a ten-pay policy and be paid up in ten years. Paying premiums during working years has a strong appeal for the obvious reason of paying while you are earning money, but there are also other reasons to pay the higher premiums: you are more likely to be able to deduct the premiums, ans who doesn't need another tax deduction? and with a paid up policy you'll never be asked to pay a higher premium.

Long Term Care - if you're under age 50...

Taking care of our parents is a privilege and a responsibility. Being a care-giver is a particular challenge these days because we live so spread apart from family and most familes require two incomes tomeet their financial goals. Be sure to encourage your parent to investigate long term care insurance. Having a third party (health care professional) provide the essential care allows you to play a more supportive rolse. And as with anything, there's no substitute for money coming in during challenging times. Lastly, though most people can't get mentally past thinking that long term care is for another stage in life - if your budget (or the phrase I prefer, your "spending plan") would permit, it is a smart purchase at any age.
